Have you ever wondered how come that in the top 10 highest grossing films of all time 7 out of the 10 are action movies? Some of the most recognizable names in cinema stemmed from this genre.
Honestly, I have struggled with understanding with how successful these films are, but one has to understand that the marketing used for these films is genius. They don't target an age (but often is teenagers) but the constant action and explosion and chaos occurring attracts the males heavily. The second highest grossing action movie of all time, and one of the most well known, is Avengers: Endgame directed by the Russo Brothers. This movie grossed a light 2.8 billion dollars.
Action movies usually contain lots of cuts, heavy on effects like explosions, they usually follow one character overcome evil in an epic hero fashion. In movies like superhero movies the main character usually stumbles upon their powers which set course for the rest of the events in the movie. The antagonist is usually the opposite of the main character. In true machismo manners, the tall, strong protagonist wins over everything. A huge subgenre of action is superhero movies as its been mentioned, these films are a huge success because of the way they are all linked with each other and the stories overlap like in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starting in 2008, when Iron-Man broke into theaters people loved our new iconic superhero being portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. The flying red iron covered hero would lay the foundation for over 20 movies and 15 years of content as of today. The sequel factor comes in to collect money as time goes, seen in Avengers: Endgame which was the ending of the first big main storyline in the MCU, which took 10 years to happen. The huge success from action movies lead to sequels and remastered.
The soundtrack is a signature part of any action movie as well. Iconic score can either make or break any action movie. The music enhances the movie, an example of this being Top Gun and the song "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins. The scene is fueled with planes taking off and the pace of the song compliments it brilliantly as it gives the watcher a sense of adrenaline. In the previously mentioned MCU Movies, the scores are thrilling, epic, songs that when matched up with the film, you get the epic final project.
The brilliant marketing I had mentioned earlier is also a huge part on action movies' success. Since these movies' usually have high budgets, you see advertisements for these everywhere. Whether it is on TV, the radio, on banners on the highway, or anywhere else, you will guaranteed see the advertisement at least once.
Jurassic World, the continuation of the Jurassic Park trilogy, a new park is created in which dinosaurs are displayed to the public. In true action film fashion this goes wrong, our main character Owen Grady, played by Chris Pratt, is a trainer in mentioned park and is capable of taking down the problem going on in the park as he himself would train many of the animals so he knew his way around with them. Nobody truly expected Owen to be capable of saving the park but when he was most needed, he showed up and saved the day. The pure adrenaline the audience would get as the characters would try escaping these horrifying animals was indescribable.
Another huge action movie from the superhero subgenre is Black Panther. The Ryan Coogler film brought home a massive 1.3 billion dollars. After being introuced as one of the main characters in Captain America: Civil War, T'challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, gets his own standalone film. The film depicts the classic good versus evil; structure of these action films but with a twist, rather than being pure evil, Erick Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), the main antagonist, wants the same outcome as T'challa, for Wakanda (their home) to prosper but Killmonger just has extremist values and just takes it to the next level. This beautiful film mixes amazing shots and sceneries with great action that just attracted movie goers from all around the world. T'challa finds himself and roots himself with his ancestors after being defeated to finally overcome Killmonger in a beautiful final battle in which good finally overcomes evil.
